Scholarship Program Summary
The MAES El Paso Scholarship Program awards scholarships to area high school students interested in pursuing degrees in science or engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso. Since 1989, up to five $1,000 scholarships have been awarded yearly!
In January of each year, a scholarship application package is mailed to the counselor's office of all El Paso and vicinity high schools. The package consists of a cover letter outlining the scholarship program requirements and several copies of the scholarship application. The high school counselors in turn distribute the scholarship applications to interested students who plan to attend UTEP to pursue a degree in science or engineering. Applications must be postmarked by May 1st and accompanied by an official high school transcript.
The scholarship application scoring process consists of three phases: Initial Screening, Scoring, and Final Interview. All applications are initially screened to ensure that the applicant has applied to attend UTEP, is pursuing a degree in science or engineering, and an official high school transcript with ACT or SAT scores has been included with the application. Applications that do not fulfill these requirements are disqualified and do not advance to the scoring phase. Applications that do not meet the May 1st deadline are also disqualified.
The scoring phase consists of ranking all applications based on three categories: SAT, GPA, and Family Income. The scoring process consists of sorting the applications based on each of these three categories and assigning a score to each application based on the total number of eligible applications. For example, the applications are sorted in descending order by SAT; the application with the highest SAT value is given a score equal to the total number of applications, and the application with the lowest SAT is given a score of 1. The applications are then sorted in descending order by GPA and scored using the same process. The applications are then sorted in ascending order by Family Income. The application with the lowest Family Income is given a score equal to the total number of applications, and the application with the highest Family Income is given a score of 1. The three scores are then added to give each application a combined Total Score. The applications are then sorted in descending order by the Total Score.
The final interview phase consists of conducting a telephone interview of the applicants using the list sorted by the Total Score. A member of the Scholarship Committee calls the applicants starting at the top of the list to find out if the applicants are still planning to attend UTEP, pursue a degree in science or engineering, and is not receiving a scholarship over $3,000.00 from another organization. The intent of the MAES El Paso scholarship is to increase the number of local area students entering college to pursue a degree in science or engineering. Therefore, it was determined that the MAES El Paso scholarship would better meet this goal if it is awarded to someone who is not receiving a substantial scholarship from another organization. The first applicants that meet these final interview requirements will be designated the scholarship recipients.
The scholarships are presented to the winners at the annual MAES El Paso Scholarship and Awards Banquet. The banquet is usually held in the May / June time frame. Scholarship funds are forwarded by MAES El Paso directly to the UTEP Office of Student Financial Aid who distributes the funds to the students as needed. In addition, MAES El Paso offers the scholarship recipients a paid membership to the UTEP MAES Student Chapter while they attend UTEP.
